Angel and I had an interesting conversation the other day regarding the natural uncertainty of life. We discussed the ever-changing fluctuations in our attitude toward past decisions and future goals. Some days it feels certain that we’re headed down the right path, and other times we feel completely misplaced. It’s a continual evolution of highs and lows characterized by the balancing of family, friends, work, desires, and aspirations. Dancing around this immeasurable playground, our thoughts, dreams, and ingenuity create the groundwork for our forward drive. There’s a long string of experiences and ideas that design a lifestyle we persistently attempt to reconcile in an effort to make more significant. As we react over the past and dream about our future together, we begin to understand who we are and where we intend to go. Our life presses forth as we stumble over the balance of simplicity and extravagant ambition.
The Space Between
Browsing through all the photographs that we’ve posted thus far has opened my eyes to a subtle trend. I noticed that while I possessed a vivid recollection of certain events/moments that took place many moons ago, several of the moments between that point and now may have been forgotten if they hadn’t been captured on film. It’s not to say that all these moments were insignificant. Quite honestly, it’s the moments in between that have tested the significance of those stand-out events.
Would your recollection of some “wild night” succeed through time if it occurred alongside people you no longer associate with? What if the events on that same night took place alongside people whom have since become members of your wedding party? Time will eventually be the judge of each event, drawing a distinct line between the forgotten moments and those that will eventually get passed on to your grandchildren.
And while many insignificant moments will be forgotten, those falling in the space between a stand-out event and the present moment were not necessarily insignificant. It’s a smile on some idle Tuesday, a conversation over a mug of beer, or that heated game of pool between rivaling significant-others that makes up life. Continuing to photograph, or at least take mental note of, the less prominent moments will gradually build a collection of still-frames that depict our real life story.
Inspiration from the Interstate
Sometimes there’s nothing sweeter than absorbing the poetic words of a talented musician while cruising down the freeway. I just returned from a 3 hours road trip between Palm Beach and Orlando. I had the stereo cranking the whole way home, but I wasn’t jamming to my usual selection of fast paced driving music. Today Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst) was the source of inspiration; Not only to drive forward, but to move my mind forward as well… boasting rhythm and rhymes akin to the likes of Bob Dylan and Adam Duritz.
We must not blend into the choir, sing as static with the whole.
We must not memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul.
And in this endless race for property and privilege to be one,
We must run, we must run, we must run.
We must hang up in the belfry where the bats and moonlight laugh.
We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past.
And in the caverns of tomorrow with just our flashlights and our love.
We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge.
-Bright Eyes
This is inspiring me to write music reviews for some of the artists whom I frequent. Hmmm…That may very well become a subtopic of this website.
