19 Signs You’re Doing Better than You Think

19 Signs You’re Doing Better than You Think

Even in uncertain times, it’s always important to keep things in perspective.

True wealth is the ability to fully experience life.
- Henry David Thoreau

  1. You are alive.
  2. You are able to see the sunrise and the sunset.
  3. You are able to hear birds sing and waves crash.
  4. You can walk outside and feel the breeze through your hair and the sun’s warmth on your skin.
  5. You have tasted the sweetness of chocolate cake.
  6. You didn’t go to sleep hungry last night.
  7. You awoke this morning with a roof over your head.
  8. You had a choice of what clothes to wear.
  9. You haven’t feared for your life today.
  10. You have overcome some considerable obstacles, and you have learned and survived.
  11. You often worry about what you’re going to do with your life – your career, your family, the next step, etc. – which means you have ambition, passion, drive, and the freedom to make your own decisions.
  12. You live in a country that protects your basic human rights and civil liberties.
  13. You are reasonably strong and healthy – if you got sick today, you could recover.
  14. You have a friend or relative who misses you and looks forward to your next visit.
  15. You have someone with whom to reminisce about ‘the good old days.’
  16. You have access to clean drinking water.
  17. You have access to medical care.
  18. You have access to the Internet.
  19. You can read.

The truth is, you’re doing better than a lot of people in this world.  So remember to be grateful for all the things you do have.  (Read The Happiness Project.)

  • Short, to the point, and spot on! Thank you so much for sharing this message because we forget in our own personal struggles to achieve bigger goals, that we already have so much to be grateful for… and that we are indeed doing pretty good already.

  • I am embarrassed to say all 19 points apply to me and yet sometimes I feel something is missing. We think such blessings as trivial when they are the gold at the foundations of our lives. For all the dreams we chase it’s the ones right under our nose we are never awake enough to honour. Consider me reminded. Thank You.

  • Such a well stated article. No need to mince words when you cut it so dry.

Think twice before you complain… despite having these basic listed luxuries, people still crave for more and more…

I’m 21, and I find it really pathetic when my peers complain about not being able to afford that ‘car’ or having x amount of money or how “life stinks”….

Life is good. Appreciate it. Enjoy this miracle.

  • So very true!..This is a great thing to remember when things look grim, it kind of makes one realize how much we take for granted, we all have much more than we think… Thank you for this share!

  • Life is good. :)

  • If you are not happy now and here then you never will be. We always have a lot of reasons to be grateful and happy. Thanks for the simple reminder. One should not take all the good things for granted. Acknowledgement is essential for happiness.

  • Yes , so true . We just need to remember to be grateful ! I’m not feeling well ,but when I thought of all the things I have to be grateful for , it far out weighs the itch in my throat.

  • See I have a problem with 6-9. Knowing that there are innocent people out there that have those problems, makes me a bit uneasy and anxious…

  • There are people unable to walk outside or to be capable of getting better. But that’s not really the point. The point is to always look at the positives, not the negatives. I can’t count every one on your list as mine, but I can count more than 10, and many others that aren’t listed, so I know I am blessed.

  • #1 You Are Alive sums it up perfectly. If you can tick that box, you’re doing pretty good. :)

  • Best post I’ve seen in a while. I agree with TJ Jersey short and to the point. I’d like to see more like this. I’m a sucker for lists. Seeing the things I should be grateful for written really helps bring it to life!

  • True words. Look at what you do have…

  • Thank You for the reminder to keep it all in perspective!

  • Perfect timing! Thank you for this article. I really need it, I’ve been so stressed out these past few days.

  • Thanks a ton, a lovely and simple list. I look forward to your mail everyday. The amount of emotional stability I have today is all because of reading these inspirational words everyday. I AM OK BUT Struggling to be happy, may be one day I will learn to be happy too.

  • Great list for reminding us how fortunate a life we enjoy daily.

  • Nice article. Perfect reminders for the year ahead. Keep up the good work you two.

  • I gather with à group weekly to pray for the lonely, destitute, and less fortunate. It’s tough to see the world they see. Thanks for this reminder that we should be grateful for the many blessings - count them one by one… Peace to all.

  • I’m grateful for my life and I pray that we all start counting our blessings - before they all get flown away…Shalom!

  • Amen. Undoubtedly wealthy if we have these! Blessings to all everywhere. Thank you.

  • My beloved husband passed November the 18th, his service was on the 20th.
Today we put his urn in the mausoleum.
This is exactly what I needed this morning. There’s a lot to be thankful for. I just need to remember that.

  • So true. Need to remember this when I focus on my problems instead of my blessings.

  • really ispiring
    thank you :)

  • Your blog speaks to me, saying the things I need to hear exactly when I need to hear them. I find so much encouragement in that, and I thank you.

  • That was great Marc. Even on the worst day most of us get at least 15 of those. Which is pretty amazing. We are the most fortunate people ever to live on this planet. Thanks for helping us remember that.

  • Thank you for this. I often need this reminder. Number 11 really hit home for me, but I never thought about it this way. Thank you for giving me a new way to see it!

  • Thank you for the post, Marc. Remembering blessings is always a wonderful way to proceed on the twisty path of life.

  • You were spot on with everything. Number 10 resonated with me so much. Last year this time my world fell apart and I never thought I would recover. This year I’m blessed with a great job, wonderful coworkers, a son who is excelling in university, moving in five weeks and have my health. I’m beyond grateful :)

  • Short, to the point.
“True wealth is the ability to fully experience life.”
Life is good. Thanks for sharing.

  • Simply superb. Happiness is a choice and not a chance. Just look around and find reasons to be happy and content.
    Wonderful post

  • Excellent post. Being thankful is far underrated and if we take a look we will see many more that have it worse than us. Be thankful and lend a helping hand to others in need.

  • I am thankful…
    Thank you so much! :-)

  • All but 12 & 17. And for that I am thankful.

  • Very inspirational :) Thanks.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. When I was younger I went on a lot of Christian mission trips and it forever changed my perception about what “success” is and if I should really complain about what Westerners consider to be tough circumstances.

  • Great post. Reminded me of this quote: “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” - Confucius

  • The solid truth.

  • nice post

  • You’ve reminded me of something really important. This is it. Life. Live it to the fullest, never regret a moment, and be thankful for all that comes, good or bad. Life, well, this is it. Go out and live it.

    Thank you for sharing :-)

  • I don’t know why it took me so long to find this website. This is something I will have to meditate on everyday. Thank you for giving us direction. Bless you. This is a blessing

  • We pray that number 12 will be felt more here in the Philippines…

  • I loved reading this article. I feel truly blessed for so many reasons. I have multiple sclerosis, diagnosed 1986. I am 60 years young. Not only can I see a sunset, I can paint sunsets. I started painting because I was a cosmetologist and make-up artist who no longer could stand and work. I love working with my hands. What a joy to know I can paint beautiful landscapes, oceans, flowers. There is no end to what the human spirit can accomplish when we never give up but open up to more and better. Life didn’t end for me, it opened a new passion. Anything is possible when you are open to change. Loved this article and appreciate those who shared it.

  • Interestingly, we don’t realize that we are in the top 10% of the wealth in the world if we had enough to eat today, if we have a roof over our heads, and if we have enough clothes to wear. Sobering to think that even at what is considered the poverty level in this country, it is still in the top levels of the wealth in the world.

  • Very inspirational for me at a very difficult time in my life . Thanks.

  • I live in London. It’s Winter. I have a day job. No birds singing, no waves crashing, no warmth on my skin. It’s still dark when I leave for work in the morning, and it’s dark when I leave to go home.

None of that matters though, I don’t get put out by this type o’ stuff. Happiness is what you make it!

  • Do not ever forget this. Ever.

  • These points are spot on. Most of the people live happy, luxurious and a life full of necessities. They dont have to crave for basic necessities like food, water, home and yet they complain.

  • Even 1 out of 19 is enough to keep you happy in this temporal life. A big ‘thank you’ for that.

  • Great thoughts! Inspiring!

  • I thank God for His little mercies…please forgive me for not saying thank you enough.
Thanks a lot Marc and Angel for reminding us!
