About Marc and Angel Hack Life
Here at “Marc and Angel Hack Life” we enjoy sharing practical thoughts on a broad range of topics pertaining to life, hacks, productivity, aspirations, health, work, tech and general self improvement. We promise you will not find a regurgitation of someone else’s point of view on our site. Regardless of the topic at hand, these views are our own.
This site also contains our outlook and opinions on noteworthy events and people in and around our lives. We discuss the ever-changing fluctuations in our attitude toward past decisions and future goals. Some days it feels certain that we’re headed down the right path, and other times we feel completely misplaced. It’s a continual evolution of highs and lows characterized by the balancing of family, friends, work, desires, and aspirations.
Dancing around this immeasurable playground, our thoughts, dreams, and ingenuity create the groundwork for our forward drive. There’s a long string of experiences and ideas that design a lifestyle we persistently attempt to reconcile in an effort to make more significant. As we react over the past and dream about our future together, we begin to understand who we are and where we intend to go. Our life presses forth as we stumble over the balance of simplicity and extravagant ambition. “Marc and Angel Hack Life” serves as a repository of advice based on some of our life experiences.

I came across your blog a couple of weeks ago after a search for ideas on how to motivate a difficult clients. I haven’t stopped reading it and fully intend to get your e-book and audiobook as soon as I am able.
I am a fledgling blogger, mine is at present more geared to my own growth and processing what I am learning. One day I certainly want to see it grow to helping others as you both do.
Thank you for such amazing and wonderful insight!

College is rough. I’m working really hard, and I know what I want, but I’m my own toughest critic and I sometimes worry that I’ve set my goals too high and that I’ll never get where I want to go in life. Every new article you write gives me a little kick forward and reminds me that I’m in it to win it, and helps me believe in myself - and believe in everyone else in my life too. Thank you.

Hi you two… I am 19 and have been reading y’all’s articles for about a year now and I don’t know how you guys do it. I’ve struggled with quite a few relationships in my life and mainly being myself. Whenever I am having a tough day or in a funk I scroll and pick any one article to read and find myself feeling so much better in minutes. I know you guys probably have a million other people saying the same thing but I just wanted to let you know how much you are impacting me and helping to make me into a better person. Thank you guys - keep up the good work

I am back and reading and this post of 12 relationship truths I should have known 12 years ago. Why don’t they teach this in school? Like from kindergarten and up. Relationships are what form you in life. Relationships and love and trust are the basis for mankind. Unfortunately when you enter one and don’t see the signs or know the reality of these “truths” or their truths, there is disaster to come. Today I told myself and my child that the world is based upon love. . . “love makes the world go round”. . . and sadly it does. Everyone should know the signs of a bad relationship and one that is destructive as well as learn to love oneself first. Great job on writing this article to educate others. Truly, to read this is a blessing and an education for all . . .young and old. . . married or unmarried.

I keep criticizing spiritually-minded people that we don’t need more theories, WE NEED HOW-TO INFORMATION. We need to hear from people who are DOING IT.
KEEP DOING IT!!!

Your articles are great! I am a school guidance counselor and constantly pull out a quote, a list, a thought. . . and share it with my elementary students. The only problem I have is with it being a blog, if I try to print it off, I get all the hundreds of comments and our school budget does not allow all the paper usage. Any suggestions?
Response from Angel: Thanks so much for spreading our work. We’re working on a printer friendly solution, but for now you could simply choose to print only the first few pages (in your print options) which contain the main body of each article - for example, perhaps you would print only pages 1-3 of 7. Also, you could purchase our eBook which is printer friendly and has lots of visual bonus content: http://www.marcandangel.com/book/

Thank you so much. I love to read your articles. It helps me a lot and let me share these thoughts with friends and people who also might need to read them. I would like to know if you have an article about parents and their relationship with their children when they are growing up. Something about that our kids will have their own lives, as parents do. I have a friend who is always waiting for his daughter´s call or her visit. He suffers a lot because of what she is doing in her own life. He is afraid of making choices for his own life and feeling guilty if he starts a new life. He is always alone and waiting for her. Do you have something about this theme that he could read and learn?
Thanks and regards,

I have been in such a bad place, broken hearted over a lost love and not having success at moving forward. Your writing is changing me, I can feel it. It gives me happiness, makes me smile, gives me hope. If I were in your position, I would find a literary agent, and publish a book of articles. Maybe a few of them. You have a real gift. Thank you for being out there! I will continue to try and figure out who I am and what my purpose and passion is thru you.

Happy New Year! Thank you for all of your inspiring posts, lists, stories, etc.
After reading several of the moving stories in “60 Tiny Love Stories to Make You Smile” (notably the one about the high school student taking his grandmother to the prom and the blind dog who cannot walk but wags its tail enthusiastically when his friend walks into the room)- I smiled, but I also cried. The sentiments were so touching!Best Wishes for a Grand New Year full of Possibility and Hope!

Your website has honestly changed my life for the better. At times, I used to feel really depressed because a girl that I once fell in love with is no longer close to me. I felt lonely at times and felt I was never going to change. You gave me hope for better days ahead. I’m a lot more optimistic in life now. I know I’m the only person that can make me happy. I have to remember never to compare myself to others either. I used to get mad at people for not replying or doing something for me, but it is either I haven’t done enough for them or they just don’t appreciate the things I do for them. Thank you so much. If you ever need help or anything, I’ll be more than happy to help you - with anything.

Hi Marc and Angel,
I want to express my gratitude to you for your sharing your positive outlook on life thru your site. This year was challenging but reading your lists and rereading on some days, I was able to improve my life as I pondered concepts and put them to action. You helped me get my life in order after a breakup, helped me focus on the positive when my mother’s Alzheimer’s became challenging and when I felt alone and discouraged with work responsibilities. Thank you for your friendship and allowing me to help others with their trying moments. I’ve found that forgiveness and love can get me thru the rough patches in life without losing hope , but the best has been knowing I am not alone and I am not the first to feel overwhelmed and alone. We are all in this together, when we hold hands life can be blissful.
Have a joyous Thanksgiving,
Cynthia

I found this blog about a month ago and I’ve made it a point to try and read something from it daily. Even if I’ve read it 10 times before, I come back and do it again. It’s been so helpful, when I am challenged with a situation or a negative thought I think about what I’ve read and apply it.
I am grateful for your thought provoking articles, approaches and positivity every day!
Thank you!

I have always loved reading what you both write… much needed words in today’s life.
funnily there have been moments when i needed an answer and soon enough there was one on your blog.
but what i want to know now is ….
is our live the choices that we make or just plain destiny ??
if it is all destiny , should we just sit back and watch as it unfolds …even if that means going through hurt and pain?
if it is choices, then should we get up and take a decision and then face the consequences - those won’t be easy either but will have a sense of freedom ?
please via email as soon as you get a chance. -

Hello!
I’m really glad I stumbled upon your website a year ago when times were rough. I had to make a hard decision to leave my husband recently, but up until then, your posts helped open my eyes to see what letting go really means and to choose happiness. (I’m currently reading The Happiness Project) When I start doubting my decision, you never fail in posting something that involves happiness or taking care of yourself. It snaps me out of it real quick because I know something better is waiting ahead for me.
I link this blog to friends and family often when I know they might need some positive vibes sent their way.
Thank you for being my go to website and bringing a smile to my face!

Hello Angel and Marc,
I have had the fortune of reading one of your daily entries/releases through a lost friend with whom I reconnected. She sent me a blog on one particular day, several months ago, entitled “Marc and Angel Hack Life”, a title in which I certainly found appeal and by which I was grabbed. So grateful it took hold of me!
From that day on, I have read, altered my thinking, heart-and-soul, and also decided to forward each daily blog release to friends of whom I am aware are experiencing personal difficulties, trials and tribulations.
Unquestioningly, your “work” is absolutely rightly-placed in my life…and, I am sure, the lives of others.
I am a cancer patient (five-time survivor of this dreaded disease), a former policeman, a single Dad of four wonderously-beautiful children, and a portrait artist/illustrator (back to my artistic roots, after my law enforcement career was abolished by cancer).
Please know that your work is touching souls, changing hearts, and ameliorating the mindsets of those in need of direction, support, rejuvenation and, of course, expressions of compassion and love!
Thank you for all you do!
…
Sincerely,Stephen Owsinski

With JOY Marc & Angel I sign your guestbook !!!
It takes 2 to tango & above ALL others like you to create a COMMUNITY of people of all sorts & ages, but with the same ’spirit’, positive, energizing, happy, optimistic, etc. ATTITUDE !!!
Highs & lows are part of everyone’s life, the ‘learning’ of lessons in life’s school, which is also a question of ‘willingness’ to learn, rise above the ‘ashes’ like Phoenix…versus staying STUCK in the mud of PAST lows, painful experiences, etc…Into the LIGHT, each day a new ‘birth’….

I find your thoughts very inspiring and profoundly practical!
I am not a religious person, though I consider my self to be spiritual in nature and it manifests in how I live my life in a day by day manner. I trip and fall over myself repeatedly and just pick myself up and try to do better next time. Staying conscious and present is the greatest struggle. I have learned from my mistakes, but some of them get repeated, much like indigestion! I forward your posts to others constantly and only hope that the receiver will read and digest your wonderful pearls of wisdom! THANK YOU!!!! -

Dear Marc and Angel,
Your website… Is a God-send to me. I’ve been in a difficult place in my life for the last two or so years. Work, personal life, ups and downs. Just when I thought I was reaching my breaking point, I came across your website and… My mindset has changed, for the better.
I read your website first thing every other morning. Your stories and many nuggets of wisdom, reminding me of what I already know, and have, to deal with whatever that life throws at me, is SUPER inspiring.
I am better today, thanks to your efforts to brighten and bring some common sense back into our lives in a confusing world that’s changing ever so fast…

I love your site! And I really loved your 60 tiny love stories. I have my own little love story to share with you. I met my husband when I was 7 years old in first grade. We have gone to school together all our lives. When I enrolled in college he enlisted in the Army. At 19 years old he proposed to me before he deployed for his 12 month tour in Iraq. When he returned home we married. How did I make it through that year? I remembered how my grandmother told me that grandpa proposed to her before he deployed in the korean war. The were apart for 2 years, never heard each others’ voice or saw each other in those 2 years. He turned and they married and have been together for 60 years. Amazing!

Thank you for taking the time to share pieces of your lives in hopes that your words will make a difference. Without a doubt, they do. I woke up and knew it would be “one of those days” and after stumbling upon my forgotten Marc and Angel folder, I was grateful to have something to just let me be in that mood, and then lift my spirits when ready. Please don’t ever let go of the genuine love, concern, and thought put into these posts. Dear Marc & Angel,
I want to thank you for your blog and the encouraging words you post each day. I feel as if the blogs you have posted the past few days about relationships are written directly for me. At the age of 36 I did not think I would experience a broken heart again, but when I received a “Dear John” so called email a few days ago from my boy riend of over 18 months I knew that he was telling me we were done. I didn’t think that he would allow another girl to come between us and tell him to end it with me. Especially someone whom I have never met and doesn’t know me at all. I have cried rivers and oceans the past few days bc of being heart broken. When you have looked at engagement rings and houses with the person you think you are going to be together forever and then a few days later you are told that that will never happen, it’s hard to process everything. Anyways, I didn’t mean to write a novel. I just wanted to let y’all know that your blog has brought me hope that I will heal from this.
Thank You! -

Hey. I am a foreign exchange student from Pakistan, currently residing in the United States. I live out in the country in Oregon where I have don’t have much to do. It’s been almost 5 months and I’ve wasted a lot of this precious time. Then a friend of mine recommended this blog of yours to me. I am only 15, but I must say, this blog keeps me busy. It is my source of inspiration. It makes me think about myself and who I want to be. I just want you to know that you’re helping a lot of people out there by this blog. And thank you for sharing all these wonderful practical tips and thoughts.

Hi,
I found your site randomly at a late hour, looking for something rather impossible to explain: “walk on water.” And not long after searching the web, I found you. I am a strong believer of “nothing is impossible,” and I think that we make our own future. I truly connect with many of the ideas you share here, and I have the feeling that me finding your site was meant to happen. I am grateful

A friend of mine put one of your topics on facebook & I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! So I signed up to get your regular updates. Today, I got another update & it was so appropriate for me. My son is going thru a particularly tense time trying to “motivate” himself to do better in school. He’s always been an A/B honor roll student, but now that he’s in high school, he’s having a hard time maintaining his GPA status. He’s taking honors classes, but finds reasons to not study, not do extra credit, etc. I immediately thought of your blog. If he checked his email, I’d subscribe him, too! Instead, I’ll print them out & give him reading material. Thanks for these common-sense, highly relevant topics. They, and you, rock.

Hi,
I read your post about finding strength in hard times this morning. It resonated with me as I am going through a hard time. I was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor 10 weeks after the birth of my fifth child. I was given a year to live. That was six years ago.
This past February, another mass was found on my spinal cord and it has been growing since then. I will go for a biopsy next week to determine the type of mass and the therapy needed. There will be physical handicaps caused by this biopsy. This is hard.
I have journaled my experience in my blog and I hope you will read it. I enjoyed reading your advice. Life is hard, but God is good.
Joyfully,
Elyse -

Hey you two,
I can’t thank you enough for doing what you are doing. I think it’s amazing and wonderful advice/thoughts that you are throwing out there. I have recently ended a relationship with someone I care for very much. It has been the hardest thing I have ever done and one of the saddest times in my life. A friend of mine emailed me a link to your posting “30 things to stop doing to yourself” and it has been a beacon for me. Absolutely wonderful. I read them multiple times a day and have written it down in my journal and made many copies for my family members. I just wanted to say thank you and I admire and appreciate what you are doing and look forward to seeing what else you have to share. Thanks again and I hope you are well,

Your post about the 30 things to stop doing to yourself has hit home. I am a firefighter/paramedic, former Army Airborne Ranger Medic… I started my own blog recently about my own complete life metamorphosis (linked above), I was an all American kid, that lost/left a part of myself over seas… now i am trying to put the pieces back together, and be the person I used to be. Just wanted to say your post helped me…. I have given myself “rules” to follow for one year, and have also taken rules from people that comment, that I have to follow… If you have any more suggestions let me know.

Thank you for choosing to change/re-present the “30 things” to an actionable list of “TO DO”. This is truly a more attractive approach you chose to take.

A friend of mine went around the world looking for the truth back in the 70’s. He wound up in a small country temple in Thailand and asked the Buddhist priest in essence: “where is it at? What is the truth about life and happiness?” The priest looked a bit puzzled and said: “I don’t know about truth, but a good first step is Do Not Do that which makes you feel remorse”.
My friend was disappointed at the response; didn’t sound like much of an answer to him. And went back to live in the US in W. Va. in his mother’s house by an old coal mine slag heap where he wrote poetry about depression on the porch in the rain. The priest’s answer sounds a lot like the distillation of your 30 things to stop doing.
My daughter sent me your blog site. I hope she moves beyond reading to taking first, small, doable steps, as you suggest.
Thanks!

Greetings from Virginia,
I so enjoy your blog and the youthful effervescence I find here.
As someone who has hit the “half century mark”, far too often, I find people in my age group have lost that effervescence for life. It seems we come to that fork in the road, and some take one path, and the rest of us the other. When I come across those who chose to take the other path, they seem like a shell of a person; depressed, bitter or give the feeling they are just running out the clock. It’s then I wonder, “What happened to you, that you became like this?”
Your blog is a wonderful gift, and I hope everyone who reads it continues down that path of contentment and optimism.
Thank you and God bless.
Marie

Today, thanks to you guys, I discovered so many new things. I feel as if, I knew nothing after living these 23 years of life. I have been reading your blog since last 12 hours and I just can’t stop. Where I grew up, studying school subjects and getting admission in top fields was considered the primary goal of a child’s life. Still thanks to my loving and caring parents, I traveled, I learned music, I learned quite a few sports, swimming, skating and many other things. And I studied too. But I now feel that there is so much more then I could ever imagine. Today, I am in pursuit of post-graduation and preparing for an entrance exam but I was not able to concentrate on my studies and was going no-where since last few months in terms of preps. Today, I read so many of your GREAT ( believe me..) articles, and I feel inspired like I have never felt before. I make a promise to myself, my God and my loved ones ( which now includes you)… That I will start with a newly found confidence and a hundred times more hard work. And I will succeed. And then I will live life in a better way, taking a lot of your suggestions and ideas. You guys have a long way to go in terms of inspiring people. Make it larger, make it count. There are many poor people in many places of world. Don’t deprive them of the privilege of listening to your way of living life. Thanks a lot for all the hard work you have put in this blog. I really feel like I’ve hacked the life. Thank you. May God bless you and always keep you happy and together.

I just found this blog today but I think it is amazing! =) I always get so giddy when I find a really good quote or when someone makes a really good point and I’ve found a lot of both today reading this blog. I’ve been trying to find motivation in my life but I lose it most of it when I start facing life again and then things flow back into the same comfortable routine, don’t get me wrong, I feel generally happy, but just unfulfilled and there’s more of life that I’m missing out on. But I think I will be frequently visiting your guy’s blog again to fill myself with that feeling of motivation to change so that I can be gradually more productive. Thank you.

Dear Marc and Angel, my name is Matthew. I am a 19 year college student currently living at home.
If you asked a friend to describe me in a few words, they might say:
cocky, charismatic, funny, tall, popular, smartIf you asked me to describe myself in a few words:
poor, chubby, lazy, emotional, aloneI am in a very deep dark recess of my own mind these days, I am alone, I am sad, I am angry and nobody in my life knows why, the sad truth is, I don’t either.
I have thought suicide over the last few weeks. Which is crazy because I have a loving mother and father. I have family and friends around me all the time to support me and care for me.
I am ungrateful and unappreciative. Immature and selfish. Unreliable and uncertain.
I was referred to your “101 short stories..” and i laid in bed, as I do now, at 3 am in Los Angeles, crying.
I cried and I cried and I cried. I called the girl I love, and cried. I called my grandmother in Las Vegas, woke her up and cried.
I want to call you both, and cry.Your website, your stories, your hope, has saved my life. I don’t know either of you and doubt I ever will.
But thank you, Marc and Angel, from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you. -

Dear Marc and Angel,
I feel like my heart has been shattered into a million pieces of glass and every day I stare at those pieces just hoping to glue them back together but every time I try to glue them back together I just end up piercing my gentle fingers on the sharp edges. It is hard to explain how I have gotten this way. I cannot simply type out the events that have so deeply changed my life in the last three years. But I can thank you. I can thank you for your articles. Because they give me hope. A hope for love, a hope for change, and a hope to live again.

I loved the way you guys described the challenges of being alive and having someone. Just beautiful… Life it is not a fairy tail but a challenge that followed with holly trinity and the will to give can be conquered over time. Because our time is not the same of gods plan And all that he wants from us is love one another. My English is not that good… but what I am trying to say is:
Do to others what you would do for yourself.Very good and that you love for one another may sustain all challenges that life put on us,
May Holly Trinity be with you!

I am completely speechless; I love how life is looked at in the eyes of a successor. My problem is I look too hard; I have thoughts of my life falling in a whole. I find myself sleepless at night. There are times in my life were I have spoke to someone alone boy or girl and apparently opened there eyes to a new world. And they ask me the next day “who are you “ and these are often old friends from high school, its like I am this new creature that they have never seen before. The only issue is the fact that throughout my day I feel empty, don’t know what career I want to pursue in or how I an going to get there. I cannot find a comfortable place were I need to be. I am 20 years young I love inspiring people of life and its greatness. I love inspiring books I have read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and I loved it also; The Encore Effect by Mark Sanborn it showed me how to be a performer in life for others. Making others feel needed to a higher expectation that they never could imagine. The thing I am trying to say is thank you, for who ever is reading this, thank you for taking time out of your day to listen to a Texas country kid that likes inspiring and being inspired. I do have one question I would like to ask, is inspiring people a job? If so I love the sound of it.
Thank you again, reading.
Sincerely Baley Rogers -

Send your email address and we could send you an early review copy.

Hey Marc!
I’ve been reading your blog for about a month now, and have yet to be unimpressed with a post. As a busy 22-year-old college kid, I’ve dabbled in blogging personally, but it has been more of an amateur hobby than a professional enterprise; and I just wanted to thank you for having such solid, real, down-to-earth content. It’s observational and simple, but it’s incredibly well-written and structured; it is refreshing to read.
Thanks again for being one of the few blog authors that have created a blog worth following. I look forward to future posts.
Cheers,
Jon Little

Marc,
I’ve been reading bits and pieces from your page for a while and I gotta say you seem like an interesting and a good guy. The piece on Alyssa and Ethan made me think to write you. You have what seems to be an overly rational yet healthy perspective of the world. It seems like something out of a novel and it’s pretty cool to see it out in the wild.
As a guy who doesn’t feel that he’s gotten all his shit together just yet, it’s sometimes not my primary concern to be magnanimous in my fantasies about others, but I’ll make an exception for you. I hope that things are going great for you and that they always go great for you. I don’t think there is a God, but whether there is or isn’t, let me wish you a blessed life.
Cheers bro,
Moshe

I just wanted to take a brief moment to say that I found your website while searching for documents for a college paper and I am enjoying it so very, very much.
I forwarded the link to my 7 best lady friends, and my 21 and 18 year old sons. Today I asked my oldest son if he got the email with the link and he said yes, and not only did he thoroughly enjoy reading it, he was reading it out loud to his co-workers.
We are constantly deluged with negativity in life via the television, radio, internet, etc. It is a blessing to find your site and enjoy all the positive and enlightening stories, and the many tips and inspirations for a positive, happy life.
Thank you for what probably requires you to commit a lot of your personal time. I will be spreading the word about your site to all my friends and associates.
Sincerely,

Hi Marc & Angel,
I stumbled upon your site while searching for “Change Your Life” which is supposed to be the name of a contest I entered.
I am in the developing stages of a website for eco-friendly products. I plan to include links to self-help, angels, astrology, etc.
I would like to add your blog if you are agreeable. Just email me. I enjoy reading how others manage their life experiences. There’s always something to learn.
I purchased a domain “Green2Core”. This is the tentative name for the site. I am not sure just how long it will take to gather everything and have the site built. It’s exciting! There is so much to do and research.
Thanks,
Yvette Cabral

Hey guys - I have to laugh - I like your site a lot and appreciate the effort you two have put into giving people a great deal of useful and wise information, perspectives. I said I have to laugh because I started this post off suggesting you add some books to your 30 books a person should read before 30. I have a moderately extensive background in philosophy and I saw the book from Rousseau on your list. and I started to write you saying that you if you are going to give foundational political philosophy a fair read you should read from all the major positisons on the spectrum not just one. I realize you have Thomas Paine on there too likely to be seen as a balancing act. but.. it is not really. So I started giving you the names and titles of the philosophers that I thought should be put on to be the list as representatives for the other points of view. And then I realized, this is some DRY stuff and not all of the books need to be read all the way through to get their meanings, including in my humble opinion The Rousseau book. Which I have read all the way through. For philosopy is is quite passionate utopian and flowery. You include in your book list its most famous line about folks living in shackles.
Anyway… I quickly realized that I was off base because not many people are going to read historical political philosophy from each position, nor do they need to, so long as they get a good book that perhaps goes over the whole spectrum of political philosophy and gives you the meat from each book that is relevant today. I unfortunately do not have a book to suggest this as I as a philosophy student had to read all the original source material and the synthesis was done in lecture not in a text book for me. So Instead of putting some information that I think you should add I am going to just impart a couple of concepts that I have found incredibly useful when looking at any political idea and its possible implications.
Ok there are in fact in the western secular world 4 basic points of view on government. the two concepts that make up these 4 points are the two forms of freedom that compete with each other and the two major group in any politics, the individual and the collective or group, which also compete with one another. Ok so here is goes. There are two kinds of freedom, Positive and Negative Freedom both are good. But positve freedome is the ablity to do or to have, like to own your own house or land, to be able to go to school or to have health care. Ok now negative freedom is the ability to free from interference or harassment. to be able to do what you want without obstruction. Like to where what you want, say what you want, to have privacy, to be able to keep the fruits of your own labor.
Ok so here is how all politics breaks down:
You have the to the far left the all group rights no individual rights, example communism, or dictatorship like castro, lable is collectivism. the state will make the best decisions and the best decisions are the ones that are the best for the group with zero consideration of what that means for the individuals, if you need to kill some? meh you got to break a few eggs to make an omelete. The state requires workers to sacrifice for the workers overall good and so forth. the next group is utilitarianism and socialism, examples are Switzerland (though its a special case) this is a group that is weight the following way the group is more important than the individual but the you can care abot the individual if it does not get in the way of the group, and positive freedom is far more imporatant than negative freedom. Meaning the government can tax you at a rate of 90 percent of your earnings once you earn more than what the state says is enough, but, the state provides all for everyone. Healthcare, education to an unlimited degree, even for murdering criminals. so there is some private property but the state can always take it away if the the govenrment deems “the people” need it for some important purpose. But there is atleast a consideration for the individual.
Ok, the next position can be called contractarian, meaning social contract between the individual and the society, or communitarianism if it explicitly adheres to the rights of individuals over the state first. Ok well as you imagine this is the mirror to socialism and utilitarianism. Freedom for the individual is highest but not only priority, and negative freedom, things like privacy, and right to own land, and the right to keep you fruits of your own labor are all sacred. But the state works hard to provide a fair start for the underprivliged, and it concerns itself with things that all individuals have a common interest in: like roads, border defense, laws for commercial transactions and external trade etcetera. (see any similarities to this model and that US?) examples of this writing are John Locke, Thomas jefferson, more recently John Rawles, (check out veil of ignorance some time - just google it).
OK the last point of view is that the state shold be almost entrely concerned with the rights of the individual and that the freedom we should be most concerned with is negative freedom or freedome from harrasment, and that postive freedom in any manner is an encroachment on negative freedom and therefore unfair period. The focus is on self reliance and people doing things without government intervention, a philosopher for this point of view Robert Nozick is most often used. example of this are actually hong kong before the hand over to China, the only role for government is very very limited to the most basic and essential common interests for a group. like limited criminal and lmited commercial laws, common defense and thats it — maybe road and infrastructure building, but why not let people in various communities decdide to do that themselves and pay for it how they decide.
Ok, Since I am boring you to death, will finish the bonus 5th position, and that is the true opposite to totalitarianism and that anarchy. Anarchy is a position that no permanent group structure should be in place because it will always be corrupted over time, and the sacred rights of the individuals both positive and negative will be injured. So instead, like the libertarians, let people come together when they want to only for specific purposes and only voluntarily. Once the purpose is over, so is the group, and there are no ongoing groups that can act in an official capacity.
So now you have it — the extremes of positive and negative freedom and the extremes of making important either all the group or the oposite all the individual and all the main categories in between. the US is some where between the the middle right and the middle left, depending on who is in power and the times in history but in general the constitution insures that government is limited in its ability to become corrupt and that the rights of the individual in both key positive and key negative freedoms are protected. so we lean more to the right center than the left center.
Anyway. I hope you all find that info interesting, and I will keep reading your site. At some point I might make my own blog and put up a reading list for philosophy beginners and I will let you all know. I will keep on reading your site and I hope my unproofread post makes some sense too you. I think if all americans had to take basic politcal philosophy so they understood the inherent trade offs, then there would be a lot more thinking and a lot less name calling. Life is just difficult plain and simple. And we as humans have come a long way to make it better and we should be proud of that. I am sure glad I have a computer and a grocery store and a house I can tell you that.
Cheers and be well,
Rob

Hi Marc and Angel,
For the first time I came to your blog was because of the name Angel in the domain name. A girl with this very same name salvaged me from a journey of self doubt. She was true to her name, random thoughts started running in my mind. And then I went through your entire blog eagerly to see what you two are up to. Now I’m glad to say, you two are living a life with meaning and your writings and photography choices are awe-inspiring! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for your “20 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Every Sunday.”
I am an English teacher at a high school in Yokohama, Japan.
I used this blog as a reading material for the 3rd year students leaving school next year.
My students have a difficulty reading your blog because of their poorness of English language, but reading it is a good lesson for them to think about their future as well as learning your up-to-date words and usage of English.
I hope my students will ask themselves your 20 questions every Sunday over their entire lives.

Well Tori, we do recieve a very modest revenue stream from our blog. This revenue is generated via Google Adsense. Google Adsense uniquely targets ads on each individual page of our blog based on the actual content of that specific page. Google pays us a few cents for every click a visitor makes on one of these ads. We don’t make nearly enough to live on, that’s for sure. However, we do make enough from our ads to pay for our website hosting fees, which allows us to keep our blog running.
I hope that answers your question.

I saw your comment about the condo market downtown. Yes, $450k for a 2BR is quite a bit. What about a Solaire condo 1BR/1Bth for well under $300k? If you are interested, contact me asap. This unit is available by March 1, 2007.
I can send you an attachment with more details on this condo if you send me your email.Thank you,
Ben

Nice photo of a shuttle launch (Stumble brought me to it). However, it’s definitely *not* taken from ISS but is from a high-flying NASA chase plane at approximately 60,000 feet.

Nice site Marc. the picture you have of the shuttle launch is inaccurate though as the ISS would have been at a much higher altitude than what is shown. The curvature of the earth is too slight in this perspective, as a former pilot I recognized this and further checked it out at Snopes.com. Here’s the link http://www.snopes.com/photos/space/shuttlelaunch.asp
Not trying to insult you but thought you should know. Cheers, Brad -

I saw the comments on the front page were turned off so I figured I’d leave an official guestbook entry. I love your site. I found it from the Counting Crows message board. The Vegas show looked awesome. I’m so jealous that you got a picture with Adam!
